Maternity leave in California: Disability Insurance plus Paid Family Leave

California pays in two steps through the EDD: Disability Insurance while you can't work, then Paid Family Leave to bond with your baby.

Updated October 13, 2026 · sources checked October 13, 2026

In short

In California, State Disability Insurance (DI) can pay up to 4 weeks before your due date and 6 weeks after birth (8 after a cesarean). Then Paid Family Leave pays up to 8 weeks of bonding in a 12-month period. Both replace about 70% to 90% of wages depending on income, up to $1,765 a week for claims from 1 January 2026. File PFL within 41 days.

Timeline for a typical birth

  1. Up to 4 weeks before your due date: stop work and file a DI claim, with your doctor's or midwife's certification.
  2. After the birth: DI continues for up to 6 weeks (8 after a cesarean) without complications; EDD notes pregnancy benefits usually last 10 to 12 weeks in total.
  3. Then: after your last DI payment and your provider's clearance, EDD sends you the new-mother Paid Family Leave claim (DE 2501FP), online in your SDI Online inbox or on paper. File it for up to 8 weeks of bonding.
  4. Partner: files their own PFL claim for bonding, within the first year.

Deadlines

  • DI: file within 49 days of the start of your disability.
  • PFL: file no later than 41 days after your bonding leave starts.

Good to know

File online through your SDI Online account (or by mail with the DI and PFL claim forms), keep your claim number, and save every notice. If your employer offers supplemental pay, ask how it combines with EDD benefits.

Job protection is separate

EDD pays you; it does not protect your job. Job protection may come from the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) or the federal FMLA, depending on your employer's size and your eligibility. Ask HR, in writing, which leave law covers you before you go.

Why claim every week

California's paid family leave has been studied for years: research by Hamad and colleagues (2019) found that paid family leave policies in California and New Jersey were followed by a modest increase in exclusive breastfeeding at six months.
