10 weeks pregnant: a growth spurt, fingers and toes

Your baby is in another growth spurt while your digestion slows right down. This is also the week screening choices open up.

Updated October 13, 2026 · sources checked October 13, 2026

In short

At 10 weeks you are nearly at the end of the first trimester. The NHS says your baby is about 30 mm from head to bottom, makes jerky movements on a scan and already has tiny milk teeth in the jaw. Bloating and heartburn are common now. The one thing to do this week: decide which screening tests you would like.

Where you are at 10 weeks

You are in month three and nearly at the end of the first trimester. The NHS says your womb is now about the size of a large orange, which is why your jeans may be getting tight. Energy usually returns in the second trimester. Your precise week and day: pregnancy week calculator.

Your baby this week

The NHS gives a length of around 30 mm from head to bottom and compares your baby to a small apricot.

  • Another huge growth spurt is under way. The head is still large, but the face is more in proportion (NHS).
  • The ears are forming, there is a delicate upper lip and a nose with two nostrils. The jaw already holds tiny versions of the milk teeth.
  • The eyes are half closed but can react to light.
  • The heart beats at about 180 beats per minute, according to the NHS.
  • Cleveland Clinic says arms, hands, fingers, feet and toes are now fully formed, with no more webbing, and fingernails and toenails are beginning to develop.
  • Jerky movements can be seen on a scan, though you will not feel them for weeks.

Your body: bloating, wind and heartburn

The hormone progesterone relaxes the muscles of your womb so it can grow. The NHS explains that it relaxes your digestive tract too, which leads to bloating, burping, wind and heartburn.

What helps, according to the NHS:

  • six small meals a day rather than three big ones, and nothing heavy late at night
  • eating slowly and sipping drinks
  • a short stroll after meals
  • noticing your triggers: coffee and rich, spicy or fatty foods set some people off

Other symptoms now: nausea, dizziness, greasier or spotty skin and darker patches on the face.

Is this normal? When to call

Bloating, wind and mild heartburn are normal. Call your early pregnancy unit, GP or NHS 111 (UK), or your OB-GYN or midwife (US), for bleeding, persistent or one-sided tummy pain, vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down, or a high temperature. Call 999 or 911 for heavy bleeding with severe pain or if you feel faint.

Screening tests that open now

Screening is optional everywhere. It estimates a chance; it does not diagnose.

Questions parents ask

Is bloating normal at 10 weeks pregnant?

Yes. The NHS explains that progesterone relaxes the muscles of the womb so it can grow, and also loosens the digestive tract, which can cause bloating, burping, wind and heartburn. Small frequent meals, eating slowly and a short walk after meals can help.

Can I have NIPT at 10 weeks?

In the US, ACOG says cell-free DNA screening can be done starting at 10 weeks, with results in about a week; it screens for Down syndrome, Patau and Edwards syndromes and sex chromosome differences. A positive screening result is not a diagnosis. In England, the NHS offers the combined test between 10 and 14 weeks.

How fast is my baby's heart beating at 10 weeks?

The NHS says about 180 beats per minute at this stage, roughly three times your own heart rate.
