Milestones & Play 0-3: watch them grow, and know what to do next

Is she doing what she should by now? Is it normal that he isn't crawling yet? What is inside

Seventeen chapters and three appendices, built on the CDC "Learn the Signs. Act Early." checklists (2022 revision, developed with the American Academy of Pediatrics), the WHO Motor Development Study, and guidance from the AAP, the WHO, the NHS and the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University.

  1. What a milestone really is. Why the CDC lists what "most children (75% or more)" do by each age, what changed in 2022, the four areas of development, and how to use corrected age if your baby was born early.
  2. Serve and return. The simple back-and-forth habit that the Harvard Center on the Developing Child describes as brain-building, with easy moves for every age.
  3. The WHO motor windows. The six big movement milestones, from sitting to walking alone, with the full range of normal ages in one table, plus tummy time and floor play guidance.
  4. Act early. What it means, and exactly who to talk to: the US route (pediatrician, developmental screening, Early Intervention, with the words to use on the phone) and the UK route (health visitor reviews, red book, ASQ-3, speech and language therapy).
  5. Screens, books, songs and everyday talk. The CDC, WHO and AAP positions on screens side by side, including the AAP's 2026 policy statement, and practical reading and talking ideas.
  6. Ten age chapters: 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 months, 2 years, 30 months and 3 years. Each one gives you the CDC milestones as checkboxes, a plain-language picture of the stage, nine to eleven play ideas using everyday objects, talking and reading tips, a tracker page and a page of questions for the next check-up.
  7. Safe play at home. Small objects, button batteries, water, cords and furniture, from the NHS, the CPSC and the Child Accident Prevention Trust.
  8. Looking after the grown-ups. A section for you, one for your partner, and one for families with a big sibling or a baby on the way.

The bibliography lists 39 sources, each opened and checked, including peer-reviewed studies with their DOI and PubMed numbers.

Pages you will actually use

  • Ten milestone checklists to tick, one per age
  • Ten tracker pages with dates and notes
  • Ten "questions for the next check-up" pages
  • A one-page master milestone tracker, birth to 3
  • A WHO motor windows page for your own child
  • A health contacts page (pediatrician, health visitor, Early Intervention, poison lines)
  • Notes pages between check-ups
  • A "When to talk to your pediatrician or health visitor" box in every age chapter

Play without buying anything

No flashcards, no programs, no shopping list. Every play idea uses what you already have: a wooden spoon and a saucepan, a cardboard box, a sock puppet, a basket of safe kitchen objects, a cloth for peek-a-boo, your voice. The ideas build on the CDC's own suggestions for each age and on the NHS's play advice, and each one says what to watch for and how to keep it safe.

Who it is for

  • You want to know what is typical at your child's age, from a source you can trust, without scrolling forums at 2 am.
  • You are a first-time parent who would love a plan for the day beyond "tummy time".
  • You have a feeling something might be behind, and you want to know what to look for and who to call.
  • You are a partner, grandparent or carer who wants to play in ways that help.
  • You live in the US or the UK: both systems are explained, from Early Intervention to the 2-year health visitor review.

What it is, and what it is not

This book reproduces official milestones and explains them; it is not a screening tool or a diagnosis, as the CDC itself points out about its checklists. It never makes your child's development a test of your parenting. It sends you to your pediatrician, GP or health visitor whenever something needs a professional eye, and it tells you exactly how to start that conversation.

Instant PDF, with a personalized cover

Your book arrives as a PDF as soon as your payment goes through, with a personalized cover. Read it on your phone, or print the checklists and trackers and keep them with your child's health record. $29.
