The crinkled texture is normal for gauze, and it gets softer with each wash.

Why gauze rather than terry towelling?
Gauze dries quickly, stays light and softens with washing, while remaining absorbent thanks to the six layers.
Will they shrink?
Cotton gauze tightens a little at the first wash; that is what gives it its puffy, soft texture.
