In short
Janani Suraksha Yojana pays a mother after she gives birth in a public facility or an accredited private hospital. NHM Uttarakhand and NHM Assam publish Rs 1,400 for rural mothers and Rs 1,000 for urban mothers, paid by DBT, and Rs 500 for a BPL mother who gives birth at home. Rules differ by state, so ask your ASHA.
What JSY is for
JSY was launched in 2005 by the Ministry of Health "with the objective of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality". It "promotes institutional delivery among pregnant women especially with weak socio-economic status i.e. women from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and BPL households" (MoHFW, March 2025). It is a cash payment to the mother after the birth, and an incentive to the ASHA who helped her reach the facility.
How much, as of October 2026
JSY rules are set with each state, and the Ministry has given special focus to states with weaker indicators. These are the amounts two state health missions publish:
| Situation | NHM Uttarakhand | NHM Assam |
|---|---|---|
| Rural mother, birth in a public facility or accredited private hospital | Rs 1,400 | Rs 1,400 |
| Urban mother, same | Rs 1,000 | Rs 1,000 |
| Home birth | Rs 500, for BPL women who prefer to deliver at home | Rs 500, for BPL women (delivery by a trained provider) |
| ASHA incentive, rural institutional birth | Rs 600 | Up to Rs 600 |
| ASHA incentive, urban institutional birth | Rs 400 | Up to Rs 400 |
In Assam, the institutional payment goes to mothers "irrespective of age, birth order, or income group (BPL & APL)". Payment is made by Direct Benefit Transfer into the mother's account.
Living in another state? Who is eligible and how much is paid can be different. Ask your ASHA, your ANM or the JSY desk at the facility, and ask for the answer before you are discharged.
How to make sure you receive it
JSY with the other schemes
- JSSK makes the delivery itself free in public health institutions, including caesarean, medicines, tests, diet, blood and transport: see free delivery in government hospitals.
- PMMVY is a separate cash benefit from another ministry, for eligible women: see PMMVY amount and eligibility.
Your ASHA's role
In Assam, the ASHA receives her JSY incentive only if she accompanies the pregnant woman to the health centre for the delivery, and she is expected to encourage registration in the first trimester and four antenatal check-ups. Save her number early, and call her when labour starts.
